Domestic Violence Program
In the Cambodian culture, a man must give a dowry to his fiancée's family before they can be married. This long-standing tradition gives the impression that a woman can be bought and sold and it contributes to the high rate of domestic violence in the Cambodian community.
The balance of power within the family rests solely with the male. Many in the Cambodian community do not understand the changes in cultural acceptance and legal ramifications of domestic violence in the United States.
CAA provides treatment classes, lasting 52 weeks, to help batterers learn to effectively channel their anger and handle conflict. The CAA CalWorks Domestic Violence Program also provides outreach to educate Cambodian women about domestic violence, resources available to them in the community, and offers case management and counseling to victims of domestic violence.
