Cambodian Art Preservation
The “Spirit of Khmer Angkor” is one of the jewels of CAA. Many committed instructors, dancers and their parents gather each Saturday to learn and refine their Cambodian dancing techniques. The lead instructor learned to dance with the Cambodian Royal Ballet Troupe. Along with her qualified assistants, she teaches all levels of dancers, from age 5-20 years old. The students not only learn classical Cambodian dances, but also Cambodian culture and music.
In addition to their weekly practices, they perform at over 15 small and large events throughout the year, including the Cambodian New Year Celebration at El Dorado Park.
The students’ parents have formed a strong support group for their children. They assist in preparing the dancers for performances, providing emotional support and providing snacks during practices. The parents also support each other as a social network.
The Spirit of Khmer Angkor continues to help many Cambodian youth understand their heritage and gain artist skills. They also increase in self esteem as they progress and perform, which in turn bolsters their academic performance.
